Small Buckeye Burl and Turquoise Vessel

This bud vase has been turned from an especially dramatic piece of Buckeye Burl, a soft wood with a palette of grays, whites, blacks, and some brown and orange—the result of the oxidation of underground minerals absorbed by the burl. The patterns that are generated by these colors are simply spectacular, like no other burl wood in the world.

The Buckeye in this display piece gives wonderful evidence of having grown underground, including very small fissure in which crushed turquoise has been inlaid. The turning was finely sanded and sealed; after sealing, Danish oil was rubbed into the wood, followed by hand-rubbing with a combination of carnauba and beeswax in a light solvent. This finish has a very light and transparent quality.
